Market research
Would you pay $20 for a 7x7", 35-40 page book of photographs? Would you want them to have a theme, or would a random collection work for you? What if I made it a portfolio book, so the theme would be, "These are the photographs by me that I love the best?" What question am I not asking that I should?

Even if you're a lurker and have never said anything, say something. I'll be happy with an anonymous response that you don't want unscreened. Just don't be a jackass (you know who you are).

If you have never seen my photography, now would be a good time. BH Neely's Photography (blog.bpsphoto.com).

Thanks for your time.

My two cents here... I've only ever bought two photo albums, each time they were made for a charity event and they were 10 euros each, about 50 pages/100photos, really nicely done, A4 paper sized, high quality paper. And honestly, I would not have paid more unless the pictures really meant something to me.

Oddly, I'd be more willing to pay 20 for a surprise collection of your faves than a known quantity. Unless the known thing was a serious passion of mine. OTOH, if I could pick a country, or a cross-country theme (temples over 500 years old, cemeteries, etc), that might be cook too.

Definitely a theme.

If you're selling to friends or acquaintances, I would assume they'd be willing to pay a bit more for meaningful photos. If you're selling to a general audience, it might be a different story. Then again, I only rarely purchase traditionally published photo books, largely because of their price. Are you thinking of self-publishing? I haven't been tracking comments here, so this may have already come up, but you might look into lulu.com or moo.com. Good luck!

I'm not a photo book person. I like your stuff, just not really into photo books.

Yes of course, if you promise to buy my book when it gets published!

Ditto for me. =P

I think a theme would be nice, but if you have a lot of amazing photos that do not follow a theme, but could group them in a way that they would make sense in the book, that would work too, kinda like starting with one photo, then moving on to one that has something in common with the first, then one that has something in common with the second, but not necessarily the first. It really all depends on what you have for photos.

I remember my father torturing guests with his slides. He considered himself quite the photographer. Can't imagine anyone paying for the 'privilege'. They probably would have paid to exit the 'forced' photo exhibition, but were too polite.

My photo book will be far better than that. My grandparents' and father's slide shows were painful, too - my grandparents weren't great photographers, and Dad used us to help him edit his work, so we got to see dozens of very similar pictures while looking for The One. Yea! Also, it's an opt-in thing...I won't force anyone to buy.

I think it's a great idea, especially when you can do them with themes. I have a few from my times in Alaska (purchased, not homemade) and I love to pour over them and remember. I'm sure there are people who feel the same way about some of the places you've been.

As a person who spent a lot more for some of your work, I'd happily cough up $20 a couple times to give unique gifts, and to adorn my own bookshelf.

While torturing people with my slide shows isn't my idea of fun, if they'd like to leaf through a photobook while I'm cooking, walking the dog, or finishing getting ready, I'd at least like to offer them a good one!!!
