he did what?!
Inspired by a number of factors - 40 pounds overweight, exhausted by all the walking in Prague, [info]sallysimpleton & [info]grok's recent participation in marathons, [info]annesblog's taking up of Pilates, another friend starting to play soccer, and a love of walking, I've taken up serious walking. It ain't much yet - just 2 miles around the hill we live on - but it's a start. Takes about a half-hour, has two really good uphill stretches, and gives great panoramic views of Athens. I'll work up to more...if I stick with it...but I've actually walked two days in a row (this may be a first).

When I was young I walked all over my hometown...I'd even take the long cut I liked walking so much. To get downtown, a walk of about a mile if you go straight there, I'd walk a mile or so to the train tracks, then a mile down the tracks to downtown. There was something very peaceful about walking on the tracks (and of course there was also the notion that instead of turning right, I might just turn left to see the rest of the continent on foot). I've been missing that the last few years. My favorite city to visit so far has been Venice, because you have to walk or take the vaporetto (or walk, then take the vaporetto, then walk some more, as was more often the case).

Hooray! And if you ever take up running, may I recommend the Marseille-Cassis or Algernon races in Marseille, they're brilliant and the view is amazing!

Yeah, one crazy thing at a time. However, views of French countryside would certainly be nice to have over a long run.

And in France you even have runs that put together good wine and running (La Ronde des Vignes)... and when you're done, it's pasta party time!

I hope that you can stick with it! It seems having a "purpose," like walking to the store versus simply walking for exercise, helps me to stay motivated. It would seem to me that it might be easier to do this in Athens than in, say, Oklahoma City or some equally NOT pedestrian-friendly US city. When I spent time in Spain I lost about 25# simply from walking more often, and without really trying, it was just a part of daily routine. (Then again, I recently read that Athens has the highest per capita car ownership in the EU.)

What makes Athens pedestrian friendly is that there's nowhere to park. And if you're downtown or live near the metro in the 'burbs, the metro is incredibly useful. I don't think you're ever more than 1 km from a metro station if you're in the main part of the city. That and there are stores everywhere, so you don't have to a mile to the shopping area, then go another half-mile once you get there, just to buy some milk and eggs.

Otherwise, this ain't a pedestrian-friendly city. The sidewalks are insanely narrow, with balconies and window shutters butting out at head height on the one side, orange and lemon and apple trees growing from the middle of the sidewalk, scooters and motorcycles parked on the sidewalk, cars parked up on the sidewalk, broken sidewalks, the list of complainable issues is nearly endless. Oh, almost forgot the dog crap. I have yet to see anyone pick up after their dog or carry baggies for that purpose.

That said, I really enjoy walking here. I don't know why exactly, but it just feels good. Maybe it's because there's always something new and interesting to look at. It's just a real pleasure.

Good for you Brian. I'm asking to be stationed in the Mediterranean myself. Maybe we'll get together for some ouzo yet, god willing. Add my live journal to your friends list. For obvious reasons, I needed to delete the old one.

Yours in friendship,
Kyle

P.S. I'm gonna be swimming and working out as much as I can between now and basic. So I feel your pain.

You probably already realize this, but in addition to your job, there's a personal safety factor.
